Coach Rodriguez initially learned how to play basketball on the playgrounds and streets of East Chicago, Indiana. He was 13 when he first picked up a basketball. For him it was an immediate love affair with the game. He was fortunate to have developed his skills through the tutelage of two legendary coaches, Coach John Moledet, and Coach John Baratto, both of East Chicago Washington High School. In his junior year he was the starting guard for the Washington team that won its first Indiana High School Basketball State Championship. In his Senior year he was named a pre-season All-American candidate. Rodriguez began his coaching career at the elementary school level and proceeded from there to coach high school freshman, & Junior Varsity basketball teams. His career culminated with a head coaching position with the Army Navy Academy.
page 5: Introduction: For every young coach who is striving to be the best possible basketball coach, this book will help you to achieve that goal. ....... Don’t let things surprise you in a game. Be prepared by having utilized your practice time efficiently and effectively. Ultimately the development of the players on your team will determine whether you will be successful.
page 22: Dribbling: Along with passing, a player must be able to dribble. When the fine art of dribbling is mastered, the player will be able to move as fast with the dribble as if he was running without the ball. The skill set requires that the player can dribble with his dominant and off hand with equal precision. The ball is not dribbled by the palm of the hand, or the fingertips but rather by the pad of the fingers. This allows for complete control of the ball.
page 37: The shot begins before the player catches the ball. What helps a scorer is the pass from their teammate into what we call the pocket. As the player gets free for a shot, he has his hands in the ready position from the belt to the chest. He shows the passer where he wants the pass. He shows his hands in the ready position as he cuts around a screen or gets in the clear. Once the shooter has the ball in the pocket, it is easy for him to lift with a dip from the knees into the shot.
page 52: As important as offense is, defense is just as important if not more so. Ultimately it is defense that wins games. You can play a team that is equal to you or better than you on offense but the team with the better defense will win the game.
page 85: One of the defenses I consider the best is the matchup zone. With this zone the offense is confused as to whether this is a zone or man-to-man. The difference is that the defenders are not confined to a specific area but are free to defend in the overload.
This book will help the person who is trying to become a better coach to learn the fundamentals of the game. The book is a guide as to how to teach the basics with descriptions and illustrations of the skills to be mastered.
The book is replete with illustrations, drills, and instructions which will help anyone become a better coach.
A must book for any coach at the elementary through high school level.
